Adele’s triumphant return to popular US comedy show Saturday Night Live included an opening monologue in which she joked about her weight loss.

The singer also told viewers "my album's not finished" and treated fans to some impromptu versions of her songs.

The 32-year-old took to the stage and told the audience: "I know I look really, really different since you last saw me.

“But actually, because of all the COVID restrictions...I had to travel light and I could only bring half of me. And this is the half I chose."

She admitted to being "too scared" to sing and host SNL at the same time, saying she’d “rather just put on some wigs, have a glass of wine or six and see what happens".

But she did go on to treat fans by breaking into song during a sketch.

Another sketch saw Adele joke: “I've had a lot of heartbreak in my life - first at 19 and then, sort of famously, at 21 and then, even more famously, at 25,” making a reference to the titles of her three albums.

The show saw the star treat fans to unexpected versions Rolling In The Deep, Hello, Set Fire To The Rain and Someone Like You.

It has been five years since Adele last released an album, and three since she last appeared on US TV - at the 2017 Grammy Awards.

Adele first appeared on the show as a musical guest back in 2008, and she admitted to being "absolutely thrilled" to be part of the show that "broke my career in America, 12 long years ago".

She said: "You see I was the musical guest back in 2008 when Sarah Palin came on with Tina Fey, so obviously a few million people tuned in to watch it. And well, the rest is now history."

That episode was a ratings hit for SNL but was also huge for Adele’s fledgling US career.

Following the broadcast her album 19 went to the top of the iTunes chart for the first time, while one of the songs she performed, Chasing Pavements, went from number 46 to number 11 the Billboard chart.

This weekend’s episode was not aired live in the UK, but will be repeated on Sky Comedy from 9pm on Sunday (25 October).
