Adele jokes about weight loss and Sarah Palin as she hosts Saturday Night Live

Adele addressed her weight loss for the first time as she presented the US show Saturday Night Live, joking that because of Covid-19 travel restrictions she could "only bring half" of herself to the country.

The 32-year-old also revealed she was not singing on the show as her new album is not finished yet, adding she was too nervous to sing and host at the same time.

The singer's appearance marked her first return to the prime time sketch show since 2015, when she appeared as a musical guest.

Appearing on Saturday in a black dress, she addressed her weight loss saying: “I know I look really, really different since you last saw me but actually, because of all the Covid restrictions and the travel bans, I had to travel light and only bring half of me – and this is the half I chose.”

Adele also credited her first appearance on the show in 2008 with helping her ‘break’ America and personally thanked the former Republican Vice Presidential candidate, Sarah Palin, whose skits by Tina Fey were attracting huge audience figures at the time.

She added: “Now I don’t know anything about American politics, I mean I am British. And I don’t want to say anything too political so I’ll just say this: Sarah Palin, babes, thanks for everything, yeah.”

Despite not appearing in the musician’s slot, the Academy Award-winning singer was still able to serenade the audience with her trademark vocals during a number of skits.

Appearing as herself in a sketch based on US reality TV dating show The Bachelor, Adele sang a parody of her song Hello from inside a bush while disrupting a love rival's date with the bachelor.

The sketch ended with a grandstand finish seeing Adele give a rendition of her 2011 ballad Someone Like You. The singer closed the skit by joking: “Catch me next week on Love Island.”
