AFI Awards: Top Films and TV Shows Include ‘Minari,’ ‘Nomadland,’ ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Ted Lasso’
The American Film Institute has announced the AFI Awards recipients for 2020, the top 10 films and TV shows “deemed culturally and artistically representative of this year’s most significant achievements in the art of the moving image.”
There were no big surprises among the 10 best film selections. Netflix garnered four of the 10 slots with Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods,” George C. Wolfe’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” David Fincher’s “Mank” and Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”

Another streaming giant, Amazon Studios, nabbed two spots for two first-time filmmakers: Regina King’s “One Night in Miami” and Darius Marder’s “Sound of Metal.”
The other four slots were spread among six studios: Shaka King’s “Judas and the Black Messiah” (Warner Bros.), Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” (A24) and Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” (Searchlight Pictures).
A big miss from the lineup is Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman” from Focus Features. Paul Greengrass’ “News of the World,” Sofia Coppola’s “On the Rocks” and Kelly Reichardt’s “First Cow” are other contenders that didn’t make the cut.
Netflix dominated the television side as well, with “Bridgerton,” “The Crown,” “The Queen’s Gambit” and “Unorthodox” all securing spots. The rest of the love was spread among AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” Showtime’s “The Good Lord Bird,” HBO’s “Lovecraft Country,” Disney Plus’ “The Mandalorian,” Hulu’s “Mrs. America” and Apple TV Plus’ “Ted Lasso.”
