African Champions League final postponed for the 2nd time

CAIRO (AP) — The African Champions League final was postponed on Thursday for the second time, with the second semifinal match also being pushed back amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The title match in Alexandria was originally scheduled for Nov. 6.

“At the request of Egyptian authorities, the final is now postponed,” the Confederation of African Football said. “Official discussions are under way to find a new and suitable date.”

Egyptian club Al-Ahly has advanced to the final and awaits either Zamalek or Raja Casablanca, who had been due to play on Sunday.

At least eight players at Raja tested positive for COVID-19 since losing the first leg 1-0 in Morocco on Oct. 18.

The 2019-20 competition was scheduled to be completed in Douala, Cameroon, on May 29. Cameroon withdrew from hosting the final as the pandemic spread.

The African champion will advance to the 2020 Club World Cup in Qatar, which FIFA postponed to next year.

The South American champion will not be known until at least January and the Asian Champions League final is scheduled for Dec. 19 in Doha, Qatar.
