S.Africa's SAPREF refinery on scheduled shutdown to mid-June

CAPE TOWN, April 20 (Reuters) - South Africa's 172,000 barrels per day Sapref refinery, co-owned by BP and Shell (LSE: RDSB.L - news) , shut down from Monday to mid-June for planned maintenance which was brought forward by a week after a pipeline fire, a spokeswoman said.

On Friday night an official at the country's largest refinery, situated in the eastern port city of Durban, said an explosion had occurred outside the facility. The fire was extinguished on Saturday (Shenzhen: 002291.SZ - news) morning.

The cause and extent of damages to the plant were still being assessed, said spokeswoman Cindy Govender. (Reporting by Wendell Roelf; Editing by James Macharia)
