Airbnb is growing like crazy because of the pope

Airbnb's fastest growing markets are not tourism destinations as much as they are planned destinations on Pope Francis' September tour.

Philadelphia and Cuba are the home-sharing company's fastest growing markets over the last six months, according to a report released today by Airbnb.

Pope Francis announced at the end of June that he will be making stops in both locations during his tour of the U.S. and Cuba, leading to a swell in the number of Airbnb's available in each location.

While the home-sharing platform expects a lot of visitors during the papal visits, Airbnb has already had a record summer. More than 17 million people stayed in an Airbnb, according to the company. Five years ago, that number was only around 47,000.
