Airbnb wants someone to live in restored Sicily home rent-free for a year
Need a fresh start? Airbnb is looking for an 'adventurer with a passion for hospitality' to live rent-free in a restored Sicilian home for one year — and you'll be paid to host the property.
The transformed townhouse, located in the hilltop town of Sambuca, was originally part of the area's 1 Euro House campaign to help attract new residents. No longer an abandoned property in desperate need of restoration work, it could now be yours to enjoy for 12 glorious months.
Working with Italian architectural firm, Studio Didea, Airbnb revived the property using colours in harmony with the local landscape. Spanning three floors, it has two living rooms, a mezzanine bedroom with a king-size bed, a spacious kitchen, master bedroom with its own en-suite, and a further living space with a queen-size sofa bed on the third floor. It's a historic Italian townhouse with bags of charm, stylish interiors and a new lease of life.
The project, which aims to boost tourism and bring new temporary residents to the village, hopes the successful applicant will become an integrated part of the emerging international community and local life. As well as living in the home for free, the lucky winner will also retain all earnings from hosting on Airbnb — the perfect side hustle for those looking to earn some extra cash.
'The beauty of this campaign is that it gives a second chance not just to an abandoned heritage home in the heart of our village — it's also a second chance to the person who moves into it,' says Leonardo Ciaccio, the Mayor of Sambuca di Sicilia.
'We see it as a designer makeover for the house and the Host. We're looking for someone who wants to live with the local population and participate in all the important moments of the community, from the grape harvest to olive picking and we can't wait to welcome whoever gets selected!'
