Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal tried to sign Manchester City No. 1 Ederson before agreeing a deal for Sevilla goalkeeper Bono, according to reports.

Ederson has proven himself to be one of the best goalkeepers in world football during his time at the Etihad.

Signed from Benfica for around £35million in 2017, the Brazilian international has made 291 appearances for the Cityzens, winning 13 major trophies.

Wednesday evening saw another fine performance from Ederson as he was called into action a lot more than expected during City’s victory over Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup.

Interestingly, the opposing goalkeepers in the match have both been linked with a move to the same Saudi Arabian club.

Al-Hilal are in the market for a new goalkeeper and have appear to be close to confirming the signing of Sevilla’s Bono, who impressed in the Super Cup final.

Saudi Arabia transfers: Laporte and Alisson the latest players to be tempted by money

Fabrizio Romano says a “€21m package” has been agreed with the Spanish club and a medical is now booked.

However, TNT Sports Brasil journalist Fred Caldeira claims Al-Hilal initially ‘wanted’ Manchester City’s Ederson.

Caldeira says ‘no negotation’ took place between the two clubs after Ederson ‘was sought out’ by the Saudi outfit.

‘There was a consultation with the player and with Manchester City’, the Brazilian journalist adds.

Romano, meanwhile, claimed City were not expecting Ederson to join Al-Hilal.

He wrote on Twitter: “Manchester City do not expected any movement around Ederson despite new links with Al Hilal.

“Al Hilal set to proceed with agreement on personal terms with Bono as new GK after deal agreed with Sevilla on €21m fee.”

One City player who could be on his way to Saudi Arabia is Spain centre-back Aymeric Laporte.

It was reported on Wednesday that City have accepted an undisclosed bid from Al-Nassr.

Providing an update on the situation, Romano said: “Understand Al Nassr have improved their salary bid to sign Aymeric Laporte. No formal proposal yet but verbal discussions advancing on personal terms.

“City are open to give the green light, up to the player.”
