Al Michaels pulled from 'Sunday Night Football' in Week 15 due to 'COVID-19 safety protocols'

NFL fans who have made a habit of hearing Al Michaels’ voice every Sunday night during the season might find themselves disappointed this weekend. Michaels was pulled from “Sunday Night Football” in Week 15 due to “COVID-19 safety protocols.”

Mike Tirico will replace Michaels, 76, on the broadcast, which will feature the Cleveland Browns and the New York Giants. NBCUniversal announced the move Friday and did not provide specifics on why Michaels was pulled from the contest. The release stated Michaels would miss the game “in accordance with NBCUniversal COVID-19 safety protocols.”

In a statement, Michaels said he has “no symptoms” and a normal temperature.

“I feel great, I have no symptoms, and my temperature this morning was 97.5. I look forward to returning to the booth as soon as possible,” Michaels said.

Cris Collinsworth and Michele Tafoya are cleared to work the contest, and will appear on the broadcast with Tirico.

Mike Tirico moved off Saturday game to work ‘Sunday Night Football’

The decision to move Tirico to “Sunday Night Football” will impact a couple different broadcasts. Tirico was initially slated to call Saturday’s game between the Carolina Panthers and Green Bay Packers. Joe Davis will replace Tirico for that game, according to John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal.

Tirico, who normally hosts the “Sunday Night Football” pregame show will be replaced by Liam McHugh on “Football Night in America.”
