Woman claims sorority had her manage 'millions' at 19 years old: '[I had] checks for like half a million dollars in my backpack'

A former University of Alabama sorority member posted a video on TikTok sharing what it was like for her to manage “millions of dollars” when she was only 19 years old.

Christy Sasso (@christysasso) posted a video on August 14 responding to questions about the cost of sororities. Sasso confirmed that some sororities can cost thousands of dollars per semester. The University of Alabama’s Panhellenic site lists first-year member dues as high as $4,978.00 per semester. Members who want to live in the sorority house pay as much as $9,445.00 per semester, while those who don’t live there pay as much as $4,575.00.

The cost, according to the site, covers chapter meal plans, chapter fees and international and national fees. According to Sasso, her sorority also paid for private chefs, tutors and the house itself — the rent was nearly $1 million annually alone.

“If you do some quick math, the dues for the year when I was there were like just under $6,000,” Sasso says in the video. “There’s over 400 girls in the sorority — like 420. That’s $2.5 million a year.”

Who exactly is handling that money? According to Sasso, she did at 19 years old when she served as the treasurer for her sorority’s executive board.

“You would assume, like, some adult handles all this, but that’s where you’re wrong,” she adds. “When I was 19 years old, I was given access to several bank accounts with millions of dollars in them.”

Sasso explained that she, as a sophomore in college, was in charge of writing checks for utilities, hiring caterers, paying bar tabs and throwing parties. She said there was some alumni supervision, but overall called the handling of the money “nonchalant.”

“We would throw an $80,000 party on a Tuesday, not a problem,” she says in the TikTok. “I used to walk around campus with checks for like half a million dollars in my backpack.”

Sasso added in a follow-up video that the “$80,000” was referring specifically to the sorority annual formal — most parties ranged from $30,000 to $40,000. The cost racks up since the sorority is covering transportation to venues, food and security at every event.

“The bulk of the party budget goes towards safety precautions,” she explained in a comment.

For the most part, commenters on Sasso’s original post seemed impressed that she was able to handle the pressure of working with so much money.

“I was treasurer of my sorority and can now put on my resume that I managed a $400,000 budget,” one person wrote.

“Not sororities teaching more life skills than high school and college,” another pointed out.

“Former VP of finance here,” someone said. “It was a loooooot of pressure to put on someone who can’t legally buy a beer.”
