You can now serve your guests the nation's favourite spirit with confidence, as a bottle of gin from Aldi, which costs £9.97, has been named one of the best gins in the world.

The Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin won a gold medal in the dry gin sub-category at the International Wine and Spirits Competition.

With alfresco dining and summer entertaining parties in full swing for summer, a taste of this tipple will be a real crowd pleaser. The gin has been described as light and crisp with a touch of spice and juniper and is best served with tonic, of course.

The winner fended off strong competition. The second place gin went to Foxhole London Dry Gin – which costs almost four times the price at £39.95.

This is the fourth prestigious event the bottle has won this year.

At the International Wine and Spirits competition, Aldi won more than 20 gold, silver and bronze prizes, including one for their Specially Selected Creme de Cassis –which also received a gold medal. Earlier this month, Aldi was crowned Supermarket Own Brand Spirits Range of the Year at the International Spirits Challenge.

A spokesperson for the ISC said Aldi 'consistently showcased high quality products in the blind tastings, which demonstrates that you don't have to compromise on price to enjoy great tasting drinks'.
