Aldi does it again as own label gin beats rival SIX times the price in international taste test

It’s enough to have connoisseurs of spirits reaching for a stiff drink.

Bargain supermarket Aldi’s own label gins have scooped top accolades at an international competition.

And, just for good measure, its gins beat rivals up to six times the price, knocking the likes of Hendrick’s, Tanqueray Rangpur and Beefeater London Dry Gin into also rans.

Aldi was awarded four gongs at the world renowned International Spirits Challenge (ISC), including two silver medals for its gin offering.

The Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin 70cl, priced at just £9.97 has scooped three industry awards in the last 12 months.

It underwent a series of rigorous taste tests at the ISC to claim the silver medal beating Beefeater’s Burrough’s Reserve Gin 70cl, which sells for £63.

Aldi’s upmarket Topaz Premium Gin (£13.99) also took home a silver medal. Both gins beat well-known brands such as Hendrick’s Gin, Tanqueray Rangpur and Beefeater London Dry Gin (40%).

The awards come at a time when gin drinking in the UK is on the rise. In 2016, sales of the spirit increased by 16% with 40 million bottles sold across the nation.

This was reflected in the recent Office of National Statistics annual Consumer Price Inflation Basket of Goods where gin was reintroduced after a 13-year absence.

“Our Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin has always been a favourite among our customers and we’re thrilled to see that it has been recognised by a distinguished awarding body yet again,” said Tony Baines, joint managing director of corporate buying at Aldi.

Aldi also scooped two more gongs – a silver medal for its Specially Selected Crème de Cassis (£7.99) which has been endorsed five times in the last 12 months, including a gold medal at the International Wine and Spirits Challenge in April 2016 and a bronze medal for its Specially Selected Irish Cream Liqueur (£6.99).
