Are you disappointed by the sound of your smart new TV? If so, you’re not alone. Ultra thin TVs may be the height of techno chic, but the compromises made to achieve a fashionably thin look, have big ramifications when it comes to sound.

Cabinets are typically too shallow to allow for sizeable speaker drivers, for one thing. At the top end of the TV market, makers have implemented all manner of clever solutions, but mainstream screens have been left sounding thin and emasculated.

This explains why viewers are turning to soundbars. These slim, thin speakers, often coupled with a chunky subwoofer, effectively replace a set’s built-in sound system. As a result, TV shows sound sharper and movies play louder; you’ll no longer struggle to hear dialogue or wonder why big explosions sound like damp squibs.

The catch, of course, is that soundbars can be expensive. In many instances, they’ll cost as much, if not more, than the set you want to partner them with. But Aldi has an offer that changes all that. It’s selling a Bluetooth Soundbar and Subwoofer System for just £34.99. Even I had to do a double take.

Sold under the Reka brand, the system is a classic 2.1 combo. The soundbar handles mid-range and treble, while the sub is tasked with delivering thumpy bass.

Before you buy, check you can accommodate the soundbar. It’ll typically sit under the screen (alternatively, place it on a shelf beneath or wall-mount). At 81 x 9.5 x 6.6cm, it should fit most sets that use a standard pedestal.

Connections include HDMI, optical digital audio and stereo analogue. If your set has an HDMI input with ARC (Audio Return Channel), simply connect the bar via HDMI. The audio for whatever is on the screen will output from the speaker. If you don’t have the option of HDMI ARC, use the digital optical input (common to all TVs).

The subwoofer is wireless, but don’t place it too far from the soundbar in your room, as you’ll want the sound from both to mesh.

Cumulative power output is rated at 70W. Obviously, given the price tag, this isn’t the highest of fi, but it’ll likely eclipse what your TV is capable of.

Most modern flatscreens have speakers that point downwards (so they can present a clean bezel). This adds to their indistinct audio. The soundbar sports forward facing drivers, for greater impact.

The bar also supports Bluetooth, so you can stream tunes to it from your smartphone.

Sounds like a good deal to us.
