Amazon (AMZN) is launching a fleet of e-cargo bikes and a team of on-foot delivery staff to complete last-mile deliveries in central London.

The online retail giant said it will kick off its new "micromobility" hub in London while hoping to deliver to a million more customers each year. Other areas across the UK should expect to see similar hubs in the coming months.

The multinational says e-cargo bikes and walkers will replace thousands of van trips on London’s roads and reduce traffic congestion.

“Amazon is driving towards a global net-zero carbon future,” said John Boumphrey, UK country manager.

“Our new e-cargo bikes, walkers and growing electric vehicle delivery fleet will help us make more zero emission customer deliveries than ever before across London and the UK in the coming months.”

Directly replacing van based trips, the electric cargo bike fleets will contribute to congestion reduction. At present the firm has 1,000 electric delivery vans on UK roads, which deliver over 45 million packages.

Energy minister Greg Hands said: “It is great to see Amazon taking the lead in moving away from expensive fossil fuels.”

“This is a fantastic vote of confidence from Amazon in British energy security, renewables and electric vehicles, and a huge boon for green jobs across the UK,” he added.

Combined with the fleet of electric vans, 5 million deliveries a year will cover 10% of London’s Ultra Low Emissions zone.

The retailer benefited from the pandemic delivery boom which saw sales grow, but it has come under pressure from climate groups to reduce emissions and set a leading example for other businesses.

In March, Amazon also announced the launch of five 37-tonne electric heavy goods vehicles operating from centres in Tilbury and Milton Keynes and replacing diesel trucks.
