Amazon, Intel, Starbucks report — What to know in markets Thursday

Investors can expect another packed day of earnings on Thursday.

Some of the most highly-anticipated reports will come after the bell. E-commerce behemoth Amazon (AMZN), chipmaker Intel (INTC) and coffee giant Starbucks (SBUX) are all scheduled to release results after the market close.

Analysts are expecting Amazon to report earnings of $7.02 per share on $59.68 billion in revenue during the quarter, according to Bloomberg data.

Credit Suisse wrote in a note on Monday that it will be paying attention to “unit volume growth – Amazon extended free shipping with no minimum threshold to 31 Jan in the US. While this should help to moderate the recent deceleration, we do not expect more explicit stabilization signs until 2H19.”

Amazon’s Web Services (AWS) will likely be in focus as well. AWS has been an important revenue driver for Amazon, and analysts are expecting robust cloud growth during the first quarter.

Intel will also be reporting financial results after the market close. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg expect the company to report earnings of 87 cents per share on $16.03 billion of revenue.

Analysts’ expectations for Intel remain rather modest compared those for rivals Advanced Micro Devices and Nvidia. Semiconductor stocks have been on a tear this year. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (^SOX) closed at a record high on Wednesday and has rallied 38% so far in 2019. Intel shares are up 26% this year, but is underperforming its peers. Nvidia jumped 43%, AMD soared 54% and Micron is up 35% in the same time period.

Finally, coffee giant Starbucks will report after the bell. Same-store sales, a key industry metric, are expected to have risen 3% globally. Analysts are expecting Starbucks to report earnings of 56 cents per share on $6.32 billion in revenue during the quarter. Shares of Starbucks have soared 19% in 2019.

Other notable earnings reports scheduled for Thursday include 3M (MMM), AbbVie (ABBV), Altria (MO), Bristol-Myers (BMY), Comcast (CMCSA), D.R. Horton (DHI), Hershey (HSY), Raytheon (RTN), Southwest (LUV), UPS (UPS), Waste Management (WM) before market open; Alaska Air (ALK), Capital One (COF), Discover Financial (DFS), Ford (F), Grubhub (GRUB), Mattel (MAT) after market close.
