Amazon Prime Day 2017: When is it and where to find the best deals?

Amazon Prime Day is likely to be in July - Reuters

Amazon has announced that  Prime Day, its annual one-day sale event to rival Black Friday, will be held for a third year on July 11.

Prime Day was first held two years ago and it has become a regular feature of the webstore's calendar. This year, Amazon is holding the "day" over 30 hours, from 6pm the night before.

The day is reserved for those who have signed up to Prime – Amazon’s one-day delivery service. Last year, there was a host of daily deals and thousands of limited deals offered every 10 minutes.

Signing up to Amazon Prime costs £79 a year, but the company is offering free one-month trials here and the opportunity to buy it for £59 until July 3.

When is Amazon Prime Day?

This year, Amazon is holding Prime Day on Tuesday July 11.

However, while previous years have been a 24-hour shopping blitz, Amazon is starting Prime Day earlier this year. Deals will actually start at 6pm on Monday July 10.

Last year, Prime Day was held on July 12. The first Prime Day was held on July 15 2015, the anniversary of the founding of the online retail giant by chief executive Jeff Bezos.

How does Prime Day work?

To participate in Prime Day, users must be signed up to Amazon Prime, the subscription service that gives users access to unlimited one-day delivery as well as Amazon Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Reading and early access to deals.

Typically, there are two types of deals: those that last all day, and Lightning deals which are activated at a particular time, and are limited in stock, lasting until they run out.

What is Prime Now?

Previously, every Prime Day deal has been available for next-day delivery. Items have also been eligible for two-hour delivery with Amazon's Prime Now service. Prime Now has expanded to nine major cities in the UK - you can check if it's available in your area here.

What are the levels of Prime membership?

  • Prime: For £79 per year (or £7.99 per month) you get access to all the levels of Prime membership from shopping, to videos and music.

  • Prime Video: This membership level for offers unlimited video and film streaming on Amazon's video service.

  • Amazon Family: Get all the benefits of Prime membership, plus an additional 20 per cent of nappies.

  • Amazon Student: For just £39 per year users can get all the benefits of Amazon Prime plus exclusive student deals - and the first six months are a free trial.

How much does Amazon sell on Prime Day?

Last year, Amazon boosted year-on-year Prime Day sales by 60 per cent, including 90,000 TVs, two million toys, 200,000 headphones and 14,000 Lenovo laptops.

One of the main goals for Amazon is to encourage customers to sign up to the Amazon Prime service by limiting the offers to Prime customers.

What are the best Prime Day deals?

Last year, there were two different types of deals: Lightning Deals, which run for a fixed period of time with a finite number available, and Deals of the Day, which ran for the entire 24 hours.

To avoid missing out on deals, you can add them to a watchlist ahead of time and activate notifications on the Amazon smartphone app when they go live.

Amazon has not yet announced a list of opening deals, although all members can pick up a host of daily deals here.

In the run up to the day, Amazon is also offering Prime members certain deals. The first is a trial of Amazon Music Unlimited, its music streaming service, which is £0.99 for four months, and it says there will be more from July 5.

Anything else?

  • Amazon is going to show Prime members a teaser video of season 2 of The Grand Tour on Prime Day

  • Between July 7 and July 11, it says users of Amazon Video will be able to win £100,000 by watching Amazon Video on a Fire TV device or app on a games console or smart TV.

Today's best UK deals:

Amazon has released a host of new products in the last year and is currently offering great deals on these. You can now get the Amazon Echo and Amazon Echo Dot for less on these cut price versions. Amazon are also offering up to 25 per cent off a range of household items when you subscribe.
