Andy Williams’ classic song tells us that the ‘most wonderful time of the year’ is Christmas, but had the lyrics been written today, we think he’d have had another exciting occasion in mind: Amazon Prime Day.

If you’ve heard of Prime Day before or indeed taken part, you will undoubtedly be squealing with joy and eager to learn the details of this year’s event.

If you haven’t yet heard about this major event in any shopping lover’s calendar, then let us enlighten you.

What is Amazon Prime Day?

Prime Day is an annual sale across Amazon that features a selection of spotlight deals running for either 24 hours or (as was the case for some products during 2019's two-day event) 48 hours.

Plus, shorter flash sales that may only last for a few hours.

Discounts are available across a broad variety of departments, including home, fashion, beauty and tech.

In short, it’s an opportunity stock up on all the essentials - and non-essentials - you’ve been umming and ahhing over all year.

When is Prime Day 2020?

Amazon Prime Day 2020 actually runs for two days - confusing, we know, but great news if you’re in the market for a discount.

Following a postponement from the usual mid-July period, many of the discounts will launch at 00.01 on Tuesday 13 October, with offers running until 23.59 on Wednesday 14 October.

How to shop Amazon Prime Day

Prime Day is, as you've probably guessed from the name, a perk for Amazon Prime members only.

Amazon Prime subscription costs £7.99 per month, or £79 per year, for UK customers. However, you can also sign up for a free 30-day trial if you just want to make the most of the Prime Day deals.

A Prime membership doesn’t just entitle you to great discounts. Membership comes with free delivery on items ordered via Amazon, access to Prime Video, unlimited music streaming and Prime Reading, which features a regularly-rotating selection of books and magazines.

While most deals won’t be going live until 13 October, existing Prime members can access some early Prime Day deals, which will go live from 28 September.

How to get £10 to spend during Amazon Prime Day when you shop small

This year, you can also take advantage of an offer where if you spend £10 with selected small businesses in the run-up to Prime Day, you can claim £10 credit to spend on 13 or 14 October. Terms and conditions apply, and more details about the pre-Prime Day small business promotion are available here.

Once Prime Day begins, members can use their £10 credit to purchase almost any product in Amazon’s store, including those sold by small businesses. More than half of the items sold in Amazon’s store in the UK are from third-party sellers – mostly small and medium-sized businesses.
