If you could ask Alexa for a great Black Friday deal, she’d probably point you to this £40 saving on the Show 8.
Currently discounted to £59.99, this compact smart display will serve up your Alexa requests on a sharp 8-inch HD display.
The Show 8 can make video calls, display feeds from connected security cameras and control other Alexa devices, like smart lights and thermostats around the home. You can also use it as a screen to stream TV shows from prime Video or display your digital snaps. A simple “Alexa, show my photos” command will turn the Show into a top notch photo frame.
Naturally, it’ll also double as a smart speaker. Like any Amazon Echo, you can listen to music, audio books or podcasts on it. The gadget may be compact, but it has stereo speakers and will make a decent noise.
The obvious home for your new Amazon Show would be the kitchen, where it can be used to display recipes and perform timer duties, although it would make a good bedside companion too. In addition to an alarm, you’ll be able to check your calendar or get a weather update at a glance, first thing.

In case you have concerns about security, there’s a simple slide cover for the built-in camera, and a mute button for the microphones (there’s four of them, all the better to hear you).
That said, if I was going to put a Show in the bedroom, I’d probably opt for the smaller Show 5 (which is now only £39.99) and comes with an impressive selection of clock faces, and it’s even cheaper.
It’s worth noting that the Show 8 model on offer here is the first-gen 2019 edition, which lacks the higher resolution 13MP pan and tilt camera found on the 2021 second gen release. The more recent Show will actively follow you around, keeping you in the frame when you make a call. It’s worth the upgrade if you anticipate doing a lot of video calling. Amazon currently has it on special offer at £79.99, down from £119.99.
