More than 300 starlings are believed to have dived down to dodge the predator but failed to fly back up in time in Anglesey, Wales (PA)

Wildlife experts believe they have solved the mystery of why hundreds of starlings died after smashing into a road.

It appear the flock of starlings was swooping in formation to avoid a bird of prey.

“The trauma supports the case that the birds died from impact with the road. It’s highly likely the murmuration took avoiding action whilst airborne, from possibly a bird of prey, with the rear of the group not pulling up in time and striking the ground.

In December 2019, 225 birds were found near Llyn Llywenan in Bodedern with “many others” on a hedge on the side of the road - but none in the nearby fields.
