'Where is my mother's missing bank account and her £33,000?'

More than a year ago I found some old paperwork in my mother’s flat in Spain relating to a Cheltenham & Gloucester Channel Islands account held by her and my stepfather.

I wondered if it was still viable but have tried to find out to no avail.

The person I first spoke to, who was in the Isle of Man but dealt with the Channel Islands, could not trace the account as the number had too few digits. He suggested I speak to Lloyds Bank, of which C&G was a subsidiary.

I visited my branch and it was suggested that the account might have been transferred to TSB. The bank rang TSB for me but it couldn’t help.

I did not call anyone again until this year, as my mother had been given only a few months to live. That obviously was the main focus of my attention. Sadly, she has now died.

I then tried the C&G Channel Islands number again but it was not recognised any more. I sent all the paperwork to its address in Guernsey but it was returned saying the PO box I had sent it to was closed.

Last month I contacted C&G’s head office in Gloucester to ask if they knew where C&G Channel Islands had moved to but the lady I spoke to did not understand my query.

I then rang an old number I had for Lloyds TSB in Guernsey but that number was not recognised either.

You tried phoning all sorts of numbers but similarly they all drew a blank.

However, my inquiries led to the identification of the account in question. It turns out that it had been closed in early 2004.

The funds, some £33,000, had then been transferred to an account held with the bank that you and your mother became joint account holders of after your stepfather died in 2008.

It is impressive that the information was able to be found after so long but a pity you were given such a runaround to get it.

Latterly your mother had 24-hour nursing care, so money was quickly used up. You say you don’t like mysteries and are glad this is no longer one.

I did ask for contact details for C&G Channel Islands and am told that customers can call Lloyds Bank’s international contact centre on 0345 744 9900 (UK) or 0044 1539 736626 (overseas).
