'Why are the courts pursuing me for a cannabis charge?'

I received a court summons three months ago at my address in the name of someone who has no connection with me and doesn’t live here. It was for possession of drugs.

I emailed the case officer to clarify matters but got no response. I then received a date of the court appearance for this person and sent it to the police station with a covering note, again to say the individual does not reside at my address. I got no response.

I then received a letter about a quantity of cannabis and section 27 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. I emailed the youth court at the email address on the letter.

I got an immediate automated response saying it would respond in five days. Then I had another automated one. Still there was no contact from it. I have telephoned at least 10 times but have not been able to speak to anyone.

Further to my taking this up, an HM Courts and Tribunals Service spokesman said: “The address given to the court was incorrect, but we have resolved this to ensure future correspondence reaches its intended recipient.”

There will be no repercussions for you and you are relieved that the matter is resolved.
