Apple admits touchscreen fault with iPhone X

The iPhone X has problems with its touch screen, Apple has admitted, as it offers customers free repairs. 

On some handsets the display "does not respond or responds intermittently" when touched, the company said, and in other cases it can react "even though it was not touched". 

The issues could arise "due to a component that might fail on the display module," Apple said. 

The £999 handset, which was released last November and discontinued in September, has been plagued by complaints from users that its touch screen was not working properly for several months.

Now Apple has announced that customers can have a free screen replacement, with customers who have already paid for the repair able to request a refund. 

Users on online forums had complained that their phone was making "random clicks" when they weren't interacting with it, or that it unexpectedly stopped responding. 

This is the first free repair programme Apple has announced for the handset. Users have also complained that the phone does not wake up quickly enough for them to answer a phone call, and an issue with its GPS was also fixed in a software update last year. 

The iPhone X was discontinued in September when the iPhone XS was released. 

Apple also said that some 13-inch MacBook Pros sold between June 2017 and June 2018 had "an issue that may result in data loss and failure of the drive", and said owners could have free repairs.
