OWN’s ‘Queen Sugar’ Season 6 To Premiere in September (TV News Roundup)

OWN announced that Season 6 of “Queen Sugar” will premiere on Sept. 7.

The new season follows the Bordelon family reclaiming their lives coming out of the pandemic, with Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) and Darla (Bianca Lawson) planning for the arrival of their new baby, Nova (Rutina Wesley) continuing to speak out against political corruption and Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) facing a life-altering decision.

Created and executive produced by Ava DuVernay, “Queen Sugar” boasts an entirely female directorial team, including Bertha Bay-Sa Pan, Carmen Marrón, Cierra Glaude, Keisha Rae Witherspoon, Marie Jamora, Shari L. Carpenter, Shaz Bennett and Stephanie Turner, with Lisa France upped to serve as producing director.

“Queen Sugar” is produced for OWN by ARRAY Filmworks and Harpo Films in association with Warner Bros. Television. Executive producing alongside DuVernay are Oprah Winfrey, Paul Garnes and Anthony Sparks. The series is based on the book by Natalie Baszile.

Disney Plus announced that “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.” will premiere on Sept. 8. Inspired by the hit medical series “Doogie Howser, M.D.,” the coming-of-age dramedy series follows Lahela “Doogie” Kamealoha (Peyton Elizabeth Lee), a 16-year-old prodigy juggling a budding medical career and life as a teenager. Kathleen Rose Perkins, Jason Scott Lee, Matthew Sato, Wes Tian, Emma Meisel, Mapuana Makia and Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman star alongside recurring guest stars Alex Aiono and Ronny Chieng. Melvin Mar, Jake Kasdan, Dayna Bochco, Jesse Bochco, Erin O’Malley, Matt Kuhn and Justin McEwen serve as executive producers alongside Kang. “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.” is produced by 20th Television, a part of Disney Television Studios. Preschool series “Chuggington” will air “Celebrate Chuggington,” a new animated special highlighting the “Let’s Train Together” initiative, on Aug. 9. In the special, trainees ride the rails on a surprise scavenger hunt, save the town statue and learn about the importance of working together. Voice cast includes Jordan Reed, Madigan Kacmar and Jacks Dean, with guest star Angelica Hale.

Apple TV Plus released a trailer for the second season of its anthological drama series “Truth Be Told,” premiering on Aug. 20. “Truth Be Told” stars Octavia Spencer, who also executive produces, as true-crime podcaster Poppy Parnell. In the trailer, which you can watch below, Poppy and Micah (Kate Hudson) find Micah’s husband dead. Micah turns to her old friend for help, saying, “I wanna know who murdered my husband.” However, given the way Poppy speaks on her podcast, there appears to be much more to this story — and these relationships — than meets the eye. In addition to Hudson, new cast members for the season include Christopher Backus, Alona Tal, David Lyons, Andre Royo, Merle Dandridge and Mychala Faith Lee. The returning cast includes Mehki Phifer, Ron Cephas Jones, Tracie Thoms, Haneefah Wood, Katherine LaNasa, Michael Beach and Tami Roman. “Truth Be Told” is produced by Reese Witherspoon’s “Hello Sunshine,” Chernin Entertainment and Endeavor Content. Serving as executive producers are creator and showrunner Nichelle Tramble Spellman; Spencer; Witherspoon and Laura Neustadter for Hello Sunshine; Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping for Chernin Entertainment; and Mikkel Nørgaard. CASTING

Disney Plus announced that Tony Hale and Christian Slater have joined “Lego Star Wars Terrifying Tales” alongside a returning lineup of voice cast regulars. The animated Halloween special, premiering Oct. 1, follows Poe and BB-8 on the volcanic planet Mustafar, where they meet the greedy Graballa the Hutt, who has purchased Darth Vader’s castle and is transforming it into the galaxy’s first all-inclusive Sith-inspired luxury hotel. The voice cast includes Jake Green as Poe Dameron, Raphael Alejandro as Dean, Dana Snyder as Graballa the Hutt, Tony Hale as Vaneé, Christian Slater as Ren, Trevor Devall as Emperor Palpatine, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn as NI-L8 and Matt Sloan as Darth Vader. Writer David Shayne executive produces with James Waugh, Josh Rimes, Jacqui Lopez, Jill Wilfert, Keith Malone and Jason Cosler, while Ken Cunningham directs. “Lego Star Wars Terrifying Tales” is a produced by Lucasfilm and Lego in collaboration with Atomic Cartoons.

Hulu announced its second round of guest stars for “The Dropout,” including Dylan Minnette, Hart Bochner, Bashir Salahuddin, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Alan Ruck, James Hiroyuki Liao, Nicki Endres, Camryn Mi-Young Kim and Andrew Leeds. The limited series, starring Amanda Seyfried as Elizabeth Holmes and Naveen Andrews as Sunny Balwani, follows the rise and fall of Theranos and the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire. Created by showrunner Liz Meriwether, the series also features guest stars William H. Macy, Laurie Metcalf, Elizabeth Marvel, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Kate Burton, Stephen Fry, Michel Gill, Michael Ironside, Bill Irwin and Josh Pais. Michael Showalter is set to direct multiple episodes and will also serve as executive producer.
