Apple has unveiled its second-generation AirPods, adding hands-free Siri access, 50 per cent longer talk time and optional wireless charging.

The AirPods 2 look similar to the original Apple AirPods but come with a new H1 chip, which Apple says allows them to connect to customers’ iPhones and Apple Watches faster.

The biggest change is the addition of a hands-free "Hey Siri" functionality, which allows users to place calls and skip songs using Apple's voice assistant.

Users will also have three hours of talk-time rather than two hours with the original AirPods.

The updated AirPods with the wireless charging case are available cost £199 and will be in stores next week.

Customers can also buy the device without the wireless charging case for £159, or buy the wireless charging case separately for £79.

Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said: “AirPods delivered a magical wireless experience and have become one of the most beloved products we’ve ever made.

"They connect easily with all of your devices, and provide crystal clear sound and intuitive, innovative control of your music and audio.”

The announcement comes after Apple also revealed updated iPads and iMac computers earlier this week.

The company also announced an updated iPad Air with Apple Pencil support as well as the A12 Bionic chip and a True Tone display screen, which the company said is 20pc larger with over 500,000 more pixels than previous models.

On March 25, Apple is expected to announce its new television streaming service as well as online subscription service for magazines.
