LEAWOOD, Kan. (AP) _ Aratana Therapeutics Inc. (PETX) on Thursday reported a loss of $6.4 million in its second quarter.

The Leawood, Kansas-based company said it had a loss of 14 cents per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 19 cents per share.

The developer of pet medications posted revenue of $4.9 million in the period, also beating Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $4.7 million.

In the final minutes of trading on Thursday, the company's shares hit $4.49. A year ago, they were trading at $6.83.
