LEAWOOD, Kan. (AP) _ Aratana Therapeutics Inc. (PETX) on Tuesday reported a loss of $8.6 million in its fourth quarter.

The Leawood, Kansas-based company said it had a loss of 18 cents per share.

The results fell short of Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 11 cents per share.

The developer of pet medications posted revenue of $4.9 million in the period, also missing Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $6.5 million.

For the year, the company reported that its loss narrowed to $14.7 million, or 32 cents per share. Revenue was reported as $35.4 million.

In the final minutes of trading on Tuesday, the company's shares hit $3.66. A year ago, they were trading at $4.42.
