‘What is Area 51’ and ‘how to floss dance’: Google reveals the things that confused the country most in 2019

Google has revealed the things that confused the country most over 2019.

It includes "Area 51", the phrase "dead ting", floss dancing and eating pineapple.

The company has revealed its "Year in Search", showing the trends and queries that rose over the year.

The results reveal all of the news events and culture that occupied people's minds through 2019: from the rugby and cricket world cups, to Game of Thrones. But it also shows the strange things that left people confused and wanting to know more.

For people trying to find out "how to" do something, the most popular trending searches were about watching events on TV. The top two "how to" searches were from people looking for ways to watch the Champions League Final and Game of Thrones, with others searching for ways to watch the KSI vs Logan Paul boxing match, and the TV show Chernobyl.

But many of the others were more specific. Vast numbers of people looked to learn "how to floss dance"; wondered about how to pronounce the word psalm, presumably because of Kim and Kanye's child; and how to eat pineapple.

The year of political news also led people to find instructions from Google, too. The top 10 "how to" searches included people looking for instructions on both registering to vote, and how to vote in the European Elections.

The "what is" searches are a similar mix of high- and low-brow, and expected and unexpected.

People looked for information about Brexit news, searching for explanations of the backstop, Article 50 and Article 13. They also looked for an explanation of the super over that settled the cricket world cup, and information about Area 51 as people prepared to raid it.

But not everything came from the news. Among the more unexpected searches are people looking for an explanation of the phrase "dead ting", the new anthropological group known as "VSCO girls", and the trending dairy product "quark".
