Arizona State won't play for at least two weeks after Colorado game is canceled

Arizona State has had a second consecutive game canceled.

The Pac-12 announced Sunday afternoon that the Sun Devils would be unable to play Colorado on Nov. 21. ASU’s Week 11 game against Cal was canceled Friday, a day before it was set to be played.

“This decision was made under the Pac-12’s football game cancellation policy due to Arizona State not having the minimum number of scholarship players available for the game as a result of a number of positive student-athlete COVID-19 cases and resulting isolation of additional football student-athletes under contact tracing protocols,” the Pac-12 said in a statement.

ASU is currently dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak across the team. The school said that multiple players and coaches had contracted the virus, including head coach Herm Edwards. Edwards said on Friday that he was doing “fine.”

The second cancellation means that ASU has three games remaining on its schedule pending a possible makeup game on Dec. 19. The Sun Devils lost to USC to start the Pac-12 season on Nov. 7. Colorado, meanwhile, is 2-0 after beating UCLA and Stanford to start the 2020 season.

The early cancellation could give the Pac-12 a chance to find an opponent for Colorado on Saturday if another game is canceled. The conference pitted UCLA against Cal after the Bruins’ game vs. Utah was also canceled in Week 11. UCLA beat Cal on Sunday in a game that started at 9 a.m. PST.

The cancellation is the third Week 12 game that’s been canceled due to COVID-19 cases. UTEP won’t play UAB and Miami (Ohio) won’t play Ohio. Fifteen games were either canceled or postponed in Week 11.
