Artist upcycles used tires into trendy furniture to keep them out of landfills and oceans

An artist is upcycling old tires into stunning home decor and furniture.

Decode and demystify Gen Z's latest online slang terms with In The Know's new glossary.

Tires are among the most common plastic pollutants on the planet. The tires that aren’t recycled or burned usually end up in landfills. Estimates say that tires make up between 10% and 28% of all of the world’s oceans’ microplastic waste.

Cheryl Hayes of Inspired Tire is doing her part to save the environment by giving used tires a second life. She takes the old tires from cars, bicycles, motorcycles and lawn mowers to create colorful ottomans, mirrors, tables and swings. Each of her products is one-of-a-kind and adds a bold splash of color to any space.

You’d never know Hayes’ bumblebee ottoman, sunflower mirror or ornate floral-patterned table were ever tires beforehand.

“Living simple is good for the soul,” she captioned one video. “If you look around and see the clutter and realize you had to buy all of that, well, that makes you think. Recycle, repurpose, reuse, upcycle.”

Even Hayes’ simple tire swing is eye-catching. She painted the used tire white, covered it with peach, pink and yellow roses and painted the inside pink.

“The process can sometimes be challenging,” Hayes wrote in a blog post. “Creating something from what others consider nothing is so rewarding to me. I’ve always been one to think outside the box. This seems to come naturally to me, and I hope by sharing what I do, I can inspire others to do the same.”
