Yahoo Finance Assassin’s Creed Valhalla gets serious about Norse mythology
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has released a new video about the importance of Norse mythology in its narrative.
The video, which is narrated by Ubisoft’s Darby McDevitt, expands on the historical context of the game and the Old Norse religion.
McDevitt goes over some of the major points of Norse mythology, such as its pantheon, the warrior paradise of Valhalla and differences from Christianity. He even quotes a passage from the “Hávamál,” a poem that’s traditionally attributed to the god Odin.
“The unwise man lies awake all night, pondering everything over and over,” McDevitt says in the video, “And when morning comes his mind is weary, and his burdens have not yet lifted.”
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla takes place in 873 CE during the Viking invasion of England. As the Norse warrior Eivor, you, as the player, are on a quest to find your clan a new home in the British Isles. During Eivor’s quest, he or she (you can choose Eivor’s sex) will encounter real-life historical figures such as Ragnar Lodbrok and Alfred the Great.
And because AC Valhalla is an Assassin’s Creed game, you’ll also be plunged into the secret war between the Hidden Ones and the Order of Ancients.
If you’re not familiar with Assassin’s Creed, the premise of the game is that humans were artificially manufactured by a previous super-advanced race that left behind artifacts of massive power. The Hidden Ones (who reform as the Assassins) and the Order of Ancients (who become the Templars) have been fighting over these artifacts (Pieces of Eden) since the dawn of humanity, unbeknownst to the rest of the world.
Ubisoft previously revealed a roadmap for AC Valhalla’s DLC. The roadmap didn’t mention a DLC about Norse mythology, but judging by the glimpse of the Bifröst we saw in the trailer, it’s safe to assume we’ll get some content devoted solely to the Norse pantheon as the previous games did with Egyptian mythology and Greek mythology.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will launch on Nov. 10 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S and on Nov. 12 for PlayStation 5.
