Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings' (NASDAQ:AAWW) earnings growth rate lags the 13% CAGR delivered to shareholders

While Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:AAWW) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 16% in the last quarter. But that shouldn't obscure the pleasing returns achieved by shareholders over the last three years. In the last three years the share price is up, 45%: better than the market.

While this past week has detracted from the company's three-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During three years of share price growth, Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings achieved compound earnings per share growth of 24% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 13% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market has moderated its expectations for growth, somewhat. This cautious sentiment is reflected in its (fairly low) P/E ratio of 3.57.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings' earnings, revenue and cash flow.

A Different Perspective

Although it hurts that Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings returned a loss of 11% in the last twelve months, the broader market was actually worse, returning a loss of 18%. Of course, the long term returns are far more important and the good news is that over five years, the stock has returned 1.8% for each year. In the best case scenario the last year is just a temporary blip on the journey to a brighter future. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings has 3 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit unpleasant) we think you should know about.
