Antoine Griezmann scored twice but was sent off for Atletico Madrid as they fell to a 3-2 Champions League Group B defeat to Liverpool whose in-form attacker Mohamed Salah netted a double, including the winner from the penalty spot.
Salah opened the scoring with a deflected effort in the eighth minute and Naby Keita added a second with a thunderous volley five minutes later, but Liverpool’s defence imploded and Atletico came roaring back.
Griezmann steered home a Koke shot in the 20th minute to reduce the deficit and 14 minutes later he put his side level, but he was sent off seven minutes into the second half for a careless and dangerous high boot that caught Roberto Firmino in the head.
Salah put Liverpool back in front with a 78th-minute penalty and Atletico had a similar award overturned after a VAR review, leaving the Reds to see out the game and stay top in Group B on nine points, five ahead of second-placed Atletico.

Klopp gives his reaction on BT Sport.
He says: “The tough game we expected, we did surprisingly well at the beginning - we didn’t expect them that defensive.
“We scored two wonderful goals and played really good football. Atletico aren’t bothered about not having possession and then we give the first goal away.
“For the second, the gaps we gave away were not right. But we played a really tough second-half, intense for both teams.”
He adds: “I think our penalty is a penalty, the other one is not. I didn’t expect [the reversal] but it’s the right decision.
“The red card is unlucky but for sure it’s a red card.”

Another record for Mo Salah...
The Egyptian has now scored in each of his last six away Champions League games for Liverpool.
That’s a club record with the only Premier League player to better that is Sergio Aguero - with seven between 2017 and 2019.
22:10 , Marc Mayo
Elsewhere in Group B, Porto beat AC Milan 1-0.
That puts Liverpool top on nine points, five clear of Atleti and Porto - with Milan bottom and pointless.

Klopp certainly not impressed with Simeone’s lack of handshake there...
The Atletico manager was straight down the tunnel at the final whistle.
FULL TIME! Atletico 2-3 Liverpool
21:57 , Marc Mayo
Game over! What a rollercoaster.
21:56 , Marc Mayo
90+5 mins: Liverpool are almost there, with little danger in stoppage time so far.
21:53 , Marc Mayo
90+3 mins: Correa flies in with an effort - high and wide.
21:52 , Marc Mayo
90+2 mins: Williams on for Salah as Liverpool look to run down the clock.
21:51 , Marc Mayo
90 mins: Six minutes added on.
Dare I say it, Atletico seem pretty dejected. Can they rally once again or can Liverpool steer this ship home?
21:50 , Marc Mayo
89 mins: An offside decision against Atletico is the latest incident to earn jeers, albeit more half-hearted than earlier efforts.
21:48 , Marc Mayo
87 mins: Atletico look tired on the break and Gomez, on for Alexander-Arnold, can just about clear.
21:45 , Marc Mayo
84 mins: Overturned! Jota’s tangle with Gimenez is deemed not enough to send the defender to the ground. What scenes!
21:43 , Marc Mayo
82 mins: Siebert is going to the screen!
21:42 , Marc Mayo
81 mins: VAR is having a check but Suarez has the ball prepped...
21:41 , Marc Mayo
80 mins: This time for Atletico!
21:40 , Marc Mayo
78 mins: Lord only knows what Hermoso thought he was doing as the ball dropped and he clattered into Jota - a stonewall penalty.
Salah, cool as you like, buries the spot-kick.
Simeone makes four subs as a result - Suarez, Llorente, Correa and Lodi on for Felix, Hermoso, De Paul and Lemar.
GOAL! Atletico 2-3 Liverpool | Salah
21:38 , Marc Mayo
77 mins: Salah... scores!
21:36 , Marc Mayo
75 mins: Hermoso, about to be taken off, downs his man!
21:34 , Marc Mayo
73 mins: Unable to make his changes, Simeone is hurling himself around the technical area to rally the crowd. The Wanda Metropolitano responds, can his team?
21:33 , Marc Mayo
71 mins: This game has become an end-to-end affair between two quite knackered teams.
An upcoming triple change for Simeone appears to recognise as much.
21:29 , Marc Mayo
68 mins: Former Atletico man Jota struggles to collect an imperfect Firmino pass and Liverpool are forced to settle for a corner.
21:27 , Marc Mayo
65 mins: Liverpool back on the front foot and Oblak gathers a shot into his body.
There is then a stoppage for Hermoso to receive treatment, although the defender should carry on after crunching into Fabinho.
21:24 , Marc Mayo
63 mins: Alexander-Arnold commits a handball as the ball bobbles off a defender - and is booked for launching the ball into the stand.
21:22 , Marc Mayo
61 mins: Alisson is on his toes to make some evasive action and head out a dangerous lob over the top.
Klopp turns to his bench for some fresh legs - Mane and Milner off, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jota on.
21:20 , Marc Mayo
58 mins: Milner clashes with Trippier in the air and Atletico see a great chance to level up their man disadvantage.
Siebert dishes out only a yellow before giving Simeone a talking to for his, shall we say, exuberant reaction.
21:18 , Marc Mayo
57 mins: And another chance for the visitors...
Robertson throws his foot at a bouncing ball as he enters the area and sends it a yard over the bar.
21:17 , Marc Mayo
55 mins: Liverpool are straight into attack and Alexander-Arnold reworks a corner with a lovely cross on his left.
Van Dijk leaps well to head goalward but it’s easy for Oblak.
21:15 , Marc Mayo
53 mins: Huge jeers for referee Daniel Siebert, who was not told to go and check the VAR monitor after taking his time over the decision to dismiss Griezmann.
Firmino received a bit of treatment and is thankfully back on.
Yet another huge twist to this game...
21:12 , Marc Mayo
51 mins: Griezmann is off for a high foot on Firmino! It didn’t appear too intentional but clearly connected with the Brazilian’s face and he was out of control.

49 mins: Chance!
Atletico break through with Carrasco and Alisson makes the save from close-range.
Matip was slow to spot the Belgian’s run and collided with his goalkeeper on the way back, although Alisson looks to be okay.
21:09 , Marc Mayo
48 mins: Liverpool on the front foot and winning a corner early doors.
Mane loops a header that Oblak looks like he can claim and yet parries into trouble, with the rebound crossed into empty space.
21:06 , Marc Mayo
46 mins: Gimenez also replaces Kondogbia for a straight swap in the Atletico backline.
Second-half begins! Atletico 2-2 Liverpool
21:05 , Marc Mayo
Klopp will indeed go to his bench, Fabinho replaces Keita.
21:02 , Marc Mayo
The second-half is almost upon us. Will Klopp go to his bench? Fabinho may be the obvious choice to anchor that rather transparent midfield.
20:57 , Marc Mayo
If that was Salah’s goal, which it now appears to be, it will be the ninth game in a row he has scored for Liverpool - a club record.
And one other first tonight - it’s the first time the Reds have both scored and conceded twice in the first-half of a Champions League game.
Half-time! Atletico 2-2 Liverpool
20:49 , Marc Mayo
Just the four goals in that half.
To coin a phrase: “Are you not entertained?”
20:48 , Marc Mayo
45 mins: Liverpool calm things down as two minutes of stoppage time begins.
20:45 , Marc Mayo
43 mins: Alisson again called into action as Lemar finds space in the area but can’t squeeze it in from a tight angle.
It’s all a bit straightforward for the hosts.
20:44 , Marc Mayo
42 mins: Oh, Alisson is fortunate. After rushing out to clear a long ball, he punts it straight into his own man and the ball falls right back to him - rather than Griezmann.
20:42 , Marc Mayo
39 mins: Chance!
There is the counter in full flow, Joao Felix set free down the left, cutting inside and firing at Alisson.
It’s not quite in the corner and the keeper gathers it at the second attempt.
20:41 , Marc Mayo
38 mins: The edge has gone from the visitors’ game and Atletico now look far more comfortable, sitting back and soaking it up before launching into the counter.
Or Simeoneball, as it’s known.
20:37 , Marc Mayo
34 mins: Liverpool’s defending left a lot to be desired but a great finish by Griezmann has brought Atleti back from the dead - with the Wanda Metropolitano off the scale!
GOAL! Atletico 2-2 Liverpool | Griezmann
20:36 , Marc Mayo
33 mins: Griezmann at the double!
20:33 , Marc Mayo
30 mins: Liverpool calming the game down is a pretty sound strategy and Milner does so to win a free-kick by the corner flag.
The longer the opposition keep the ball off Atleti, the greater the chance they have of being kicked...
20:30 , Marc Mayo
27 mins: Chance!
Griezmann is set away with the flag down and tries to chip Alisson, but the keeper is equal to it.
20:27 , Marc Mayo
25 mins: What a start to this game. Liverpool barely had a moment to think about what to do with their two-goal lead before Atleti resurrected and got back into it.
20:25 , Marc Mayo
23 mins: The goal is given and, after a dismal start, Atletico are on the board.
20:24 , Marc Mayo
22 mins: A long VAR check for offside...
GOAL! Atletico 1-2 Liverpool | Griezmann
20:22 , Marc Mayo
19 mins: A shot goes all the way through the crowd and it’s 2-1!
20:20 , Marc Mayo
17 mins: The question now is how hard to Liverpool push for a third? It would surely kill the game...
Meanwhile, the Uefa boffins are hard at work determining the scorer of the deflected opener and say it may have come off Kondogbia, giving Salah the goal.
20:16 , Marc Mayo
14 mins: Atletico are all at sea. A weak clearance straight to Keita, who volleys it first time past Oblak.
GOAL! Atletico 0-2 Liverpool | Keita
20:15 , Marc Mayo
12 mins: Keita with a stunner!
Naby Keita with a rocket of a volley! 🚀

20:13 , Marc Mayo
9 mins: Salah danced through the defence and shot towards the near-post, it took a huge - and deliberate - touch off Milner and went in.
A surprise scorer but not surprise over the architect.
And the Reds aren’t letting up, too. Firmino and Salah since getting into good positions.
GOAL! Atletico 0-1 Liverpool | Milner
20:10 , Marc Mayo
7 mins: It takes a huge deflection to beat Oblak!
20:07 , Marc Mayo
4 mins: The ball is well out for a goal kick when Mane leaves a little something on Trippier, who makes sure the referee - and Atleti’s fans behind the goal - recognised that early nibble.
20:05 , Marc Mayo
3 mins: It’s a three-man central midfield in a 5-3-2 for Atletico, with Carrasco and Trippier running the flanks alone.
As with any Simeone side, expect them to have no problem covering their entire touchlines tonight.
20:03 , Marc Mayo
1 mins: Jeers for the knee taken by Liverpool’s players and a couple of Atletico’s.
Straight on the attack are the hosts.
Kick-off! Atletico Madrid 0-0 Liverpool
20:02 , Marc Mayo
We’re off! Atletico in their famous Rojiblanco kit, Liverpool in all yellow.
20:00 , Marc Mayo
One final stat as the anthems blare out: Liverpool have just one win in seven in European away games on Spanish soil - with none in four in the Champions League versus Atletico. Will that end tonight?
19:56 , Marc Mayo
It is a positively (and literally) bouncing atmosphere in the Spanish capital.
The teams will be out shortly.
19:53 , Marc Mayo
The Liverpool boss would also have loved to be a fly on the wall when Luis Suarez was told he’d be on the bench.
Klopp jokes: “I would have paid money to be part of the meeting when Diego told him.
“Who knows why he’s not playing, it’s a strong team. They can make five subs, we can too. Hopefully we end up having to as then it will have been a good game.”
19:49 , Marc Mayo
Jurgen Klopp has explained his side’s quick turnaround following the win at Watford.
He tells BT Sport: “We had absolutely no time to train; recovery Sunday then Monday we did a little bit.
“And then you bring new players in and Fabinho was already in Madrid and couldn’t train with us.
“We know exactly what we have to do, we don’t have to change and talk through different things, so that’s what we did.”
19:43 , Marc Mayo
Suarez on the bench
19:30 , Malik Ouzia
No Luis Suarez in the Atletico starting lineup tonight as Diego Simeone opts to start with Joao Felix and Antoine Griezmann in attack.
That’ll no doubt fire the Uruguayan up for his inevitable goal off the bench later on...
Alisson back in goal
19:07 , Malik Ouzia
So, goalkeeper Alisson Becker returns but there is no place for Fabinho in Jurgen Klopp’s starting line-up tonight
The pair missed the weekend win over Watford after flying directly to Spain after international duty with Brazil in order to complete their quarantine period in the Spanish capital.
However, Alisson for Caoimhin Kelleher is the only change from Saturday with Fabinho on the bench.

Standard Sport prediction
18:26 , Malik Ouzia
Liverpool may well be in a rich vein of goalscoring form but are squaring off against an Atletico side who have conceded only seven times in 10 games all season. With neither team likely to be putting their enviable positions in the group at risk at this early stage, expect a cagey affair.
Liverpool team news
18:16 , Malik Ouzia
Liverpool, meanwhile, are in good shape.
Brazilian duo Alisson Becker and Fabinho completed their post-international duty quarantine period in Spain and could come back into the side having missed Saturday’s win over Watford.
Atletico team news
18:06 , Malik Ouzia
Atletico could well be one of club football’s biggest beneficaries after the international break, with the likes of Jose Gimenez and Marcos Llorente pushing for returns after taking part in a full training session ahead of the game.
Llorente in particular will be a concern for Liverpool given it was his late brace at Anfield that ended their European hopes in 2020.
