Australia bushfires: Shocking moment fire truck is engulfed by flames

This is the terrifying moment firefighters were trapped in their truck after it was engulfed by flames from the recent bushfires.

Authorities in the state of New South Wales said no-one from the crew, based in the town of Wyoming, had been hurt in the incident.

Firefighters in New South Wales were forced to shelter in their truck as it was surrounded by bushfire flames.

Footage shows the firemen scrambling to protect the windows of the vehicle with insulation as flames lick up the side.

The truck is forced to stop for a moment as the flames come ever closer, but eventually manages to break free.

Fire and Rescue NSW posted the video on Twitter, saying: “The crew from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 509 Wyoming recorded this video showing the moment their truck was overrun by the bushfire burning south of Nowra.

Authorities said all the members of the crew, from Station 509 Wyoming, were safe following the incident.

It comes after another firefighter was killed on Monday when extreme winds overturned his truck.

Samuel McPaul was the third volunteer firefighter in New South Wales to have died in the past two weeks. He was an expectant father.

Mr McPaul, 28, who died when what was described as “a fire tornado” flipped his truck off the ground while he attended a blaze near Albury, in southern NSW.

He was described by NSW fire chief Shane Fitzsimmons as an "extraordinary loss."

An emotional Fitzsimmons said in a news conference that McPaul was a “much-loved and respected firefighter”.

"The firefighter that lost his life was Samuel McPaul, Sam McPaul, a young man, 28 years of age, well respected and admired throughout the local community and in his local brigade. He leaves behind tragically a beautiful wife, Megan, who is pregnant with their first child, that's due on the fourth of May.

“As you would expect, the family is grieving and it's been a very difficult night. It would be fair to say I don't even think the comprehension has set in of the enormity of the tragedy and the loss.”

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison posted a video address expressing sympathy over his death.
