BAFTA TV Awards confirm 2021 ceremony plans with Richard Ayoade as host

BAFTA has confirmed its plans for the 2021 TV awards, with the ceremony due to take a studio format with social distancing.

Richard Ayoade will return as host for the June 6 event after overseeing proceedings last year, while actor, writer and director Gbemisola Ikumelo will oversee the British Academy Television Craft Awards on May 24.

Both ceremonies will be socially distanced studio recordings with a small number of presenters joining in-person or via video call. Last year's BAFTAs were also filmed in a studio with winners accepting their awards virtually.

The nominees for both awards will be unveiled next week on Wednesday, April 28 at 7.30am.

"I have been asked if, this year, I could say I am thrilled to be back as 'host' and, reluctantly, I am willing to pretend that I am," Ayoade said. "They have assured me that as soon as the world returns to normal, they will get someone decent again."

Meanwhile, earlier this month BAFTA revealed its film award winners, with Nomadland taking home four gongs including Best Film. Chloé Zhao made history as only the second woman to win Best Director, while Frances McDormand won Leading Actress.

The Father, Soul, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Promising Young Woman and Sound of Metal all won two awards each.
