The Great British Bake Off made a triumphant return on Tuesday and the internet was lit up with hilarious memes following its broadcast.

The first episode of the 12th series saw the return of judges Paul Hollywood and Dame Prue Leith, and presenters Matt Lucas and Noel Fielding, back in the famous tent.

The 12 new contestants rose to the challenge in cake week as they baked signature decorative mini rolls, a “teatime classic” technical and gravity-defying showstoppers.

Tom from Kent became the first to leave the series after failing to impress the judges and Jurgen from Sussex clinched the coveted star baker title.

Italian baker Giuseppe was the subject of many memes as fans had a feeling he was the baker most likely to win the series.

Many fans joked his home nation was already having a successful year so he was set for the title.

“Italy won Eurovision, Euro 2020 and the Men’s 100m Olympic gold. We may as well give Giuseppe the #GBBO#BakeOff title now,” one said.

Another wrote: “Italy could potentially win the euros, the eurovision and #GBBO in one year.”

The Channel 4 show opened with a baking-themed adaptation of Billy Ray Cyrus’s country classic Achy Breaky Heart, performed by the judges and presenters.

The spoof was accompanied by faux mullets, cowboy boots, fringed jackets and a spot of line-dancing.

One Twitter use joked he would “swipe right” on Prue in her new look should he find her on a dating app.

The official Bake Off Twitter page also mocked the opening scenes.

Meanwhile, star baker Jurgen captured many fans’s hearts.

Former Bake Off contestant Henry Bird wrote: “Jürgen has been onscreen for approximately 28 seconds. He plays in a trombone trio and has a rabbit called Humphrey. Already I think he should be prime minister.”

Another user wrote quipped, “It’s been half an hour and I already know I’d die for this man” about Jürgen.

Meanwhile, Chigs - who only took up baking during the pandemic - was praised for his productivity during Lockdown.

Elsewhere, Stephan Pyne joked that Maggie looked like Prue.

In the technical round, they were tested with malt loaf.

It was a bake set by Leith who admitted it was a “really old fashioned recipe, and those of you who are under 35 may never have heard of it” but reassured everyone “don’t panic, just read the recipe”.

In the episode, Dorset-based Maggie, 70, was quizzed for advice on what a malt loaf was but it seems experience was on her side as she voted number one in the challenge.

Prue told her: “I won’t say you’re anything like as old as me but you’re getting a little bit older than some of these (contestants), and you can make the perfect malt loaf, well done.”

Finally, one fan used the words of George to illustrate how they felt about the working world.

“Me in any job I’ve ever been in #BakeOff,” they wrote.

Tom from Kent became the first to leave the series after failing to impress the judges.

The 28-year-old software engineer admitted his showstopper was “a bit of a disaster”.

In a letter shared with viewers, Tom added: “Although my time in the Bake Off tent may have been short, it certainly has been very sweet.”

The Great British Bake Off continues at 8pm on Tuesdays on Channel 4.
