Tip of the week

Don’t choose the highest excess to save money when arranging car insurance – it’s a false economy. The excess is the amount you agree to pay of any claim. The higher the excess, the cheaper the cover which is why some choose £1,000.

Comparison website uSwitch found the average car insurance quote for drivers choosing a £1,000 voluntary excess is £318 a year. But that’s just £12 cheaper than a policy with a £250 voluntary excess.

An excess of £1,000 means you’d have to cover the total cost of any repairs costing less than that yourself. But if the excess was £250, then in most cases you’d still be able to claim some money back from your insurer for repairs.

Rod Jones, uSwitch insurance expert, said: “Drivers should ask themselves if an additional risk of £750 is really worth an average saving of just £1 a month.”
