Yahoo Finance Bears trade second-round bust Adam Shaheen to Dolphins
The Chicago Bears’ cavalcade of tight ends became one smaller on Saturday, as the team parted ways with another draft bust under general manager Ryan Pace.
The Bears have traded former second-round pick Adam Shaheen to the Miami Dolphins, according to the Chiacgo Tribune. Reportedly headed back to the Bears is a conditional 2021 sixth-round draft pick.
Shaheen was drafted by the Bears with the 45th overall pick of the 2017 NFL draft out of Division II Ashland. A mammoth tight end at 6-foot-6, 257 pounds, Shaheen never developed into the physical force some envisioned as injuries plagued his three years with the Bears.
In just 27 games over three seasons, Shaheen posted 249 career receiving yards and four touchdowns. That’s 9.2 yards per game. Now, he’ll head to Miami to compete with Durham Smythe and Michael Roberts for blocking tight end reps alongside starter Mike Gesicki.
Bears are going through a lot of tight ends
Shaheen’s departure, as well as the releases of Trey Burton and Ben Braunecker, gives more clarity to the Bears’ tight end depth chart, but there are still plenty of names competing for playing time.
Former star Jimmy Graham, top 2020 draft pick Cole Kmet and veteran Demetrius Harris top the group, with four more players on the team’s current roster.
The Tribune also now counts five picks from the first three rounds the Bears have parted ways with since Pace took over in 2015: Shaheen, 2015 first-round pick Kevin White and third-rounder Hroniss Grasu and 2016 first-rounder Leonard Floyd and third-rounder Jonathan Bullard.
