Apple TV+ has released the first trailer for its forthcoming Beastie Boys documentary.

Beastie Boys Story is set to premiere on Apple’s new streaming service this April on the heels of the 26th anniversary of the release of Beastie Boys’ No. 1 charting 1994 album, Ill Communication. It reunites the Beastie Boys with director Spike Jonze over 25 years after he directed the music video for the album’s immortal hit single, Sabotage.

Filmed in 2019 during a series of live dates to support the release of the Beastie Boys Book, the documentary sees surviving members Mike Diamond (Mike D) and Adam Horovitz (Ad Rock) recounting the story of the band’s 40-year history on stage.

The show – Beastie Boys Story: As Told By Michael Diamond & Adam Horovitz – played for three nights only in Philadelphia and Brooklyn, New York. The documentary was due to premiere at SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, which was cancelled on 6 March amid fears over the coronavirus outbreak.

The band shot to fame in the 1980s and released their debut album License To Ill in 1986 after going on tour in support of Madonna. The fourth single from that album ‘(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)’ became a global smash hit.

They achieved notoriety in the UK in 1987 after a Liverpool gig ended in a riot just ten minutes after they came on stage. Adam Horovitz was subsequently arrested by Merseyside Police and charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm.

The Grammy award-winning trio released eight studio albums in total, with the last Hot Sauce Committee Part II coming in 2011. Founding member Adam Yauch (MCA) died of cancer in 2012.

Beastie Boys Story premieres globally on Apple TV+ on 24 April.
