Behind-the-scenes video reveals how ceramic mugs are mass-produced

A solid ceramic mug can make or break your morning coffee. That’s why Quality Logo Products wants to be transparent when it comes to how their signature mugs are made.

The ubiquitous staple in American cabinets doesn’t grow on trees after all.

The first step is milling — which is when finely ground clay, quartz and feldspar are melded with water in a mixer for 15 hours.

Then the mixture is fed into the molding tubes where it’s cast into clay logs that are cut into disk-like sections. The disks are each placed by a worker into a single-use mold and shaped into a mug.

When the mugs are dried, workers adhere the handles using a clay mixture called “slip” that functions as glue.

After each mug is checked for quality, workers color the cups by dipping them in a ceramic color glaze.

Finally, the mugs take 12 hours to dry before they are baked at 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit to permanently harden them.

Mugs may have more details added later, like custom images or logos, before they are shipped off to retailers and customers.

“The steps in creating ceramic mugs are all necessary in producing a final product that’s worthy of your custom imprint or logo,” Quality Logo Prints stated. “Ceramic coffee mugs are a vital part of every morning, and we all have these hardworking manufacturers to thank for keeping us nice and caffeinated.”
