A major redevelopment of a council estate opposite the £1 billion Chelsea Barracks development has finally been given the green light after years of uncertainty.

The Ebury Bridge estate, in Belgravia, has been pegged for redevelopment since 2010 with plans for 750 new homes – half of which would be “affordable”.

But the plans were plagued by delays leading to frustration among residents, who suffered “incredible stress, anxiety and uncertainty”, according to one councillor before the scheme was last night given the go-ahead by the council’s cabinet.

At least 342 of the homes will be “affordable”, with the existing 198 council flats replaced with social rented homes on the site which is opposite a patch of ultra-prime London dubbed the “most coveted 12.8 acres in the world”.

There will also be an extra 144 affordable, family-sized homes created.

The council will retain ownership of the estate after they decided to pay for the regeneration as opposed to partnering with a developer.

After the plans were passed, Councillor Rachael Robathan, cabinet member for finance, property and regeneration, said the estate “would remain a council housing estate”.
