Benefits of rose water for glowing skin

Discover why you should incorporate this magic potion into your beauty routine.

In use since ancient times, rose water is a versatile skincare product that has found a permanent place in our vanity case. Why? Here are some of its amazing skincare benefits and ways to make the most of this potion.

It calms inflammation
Rose water has strong anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which soothe and comfort irritated and inflamed skin. It can therefore be applied to calm irritation and manage inflammation caused by skin conditions like rosacea and eczema. Rose water also inhibits enzymes that break down the collagen and elastin in skin, which harm it, causing wrinkles, fine lines and sagging.

It protects skin from damage
Rose water is packed with powerful antioxidants that help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals present in pollution, chemicals, cigarette smoke, etc. Antioxidants neutralise these effects, strengthen skin cells, and repair damaged skin by regenerate cells. In doing all this antioxidants also slow down the signs of skin ageing.

It maintains the skin’s pH balance
On an average, the pH for adult skin ranges between 4 and 7 on the pH scale, with 7 being neutral and anything lower being acidic. Healthy skin has pH is a little acidic as this acidity can fight damaging free radicals and harmful microbes. So the products we use on our skin should be of a similar pH. Rose water is slightly acidic, ranging from 4 to 4.5. This makes it a good match for our skin’s natural pH and therefore a good product to use to maintain its delicate pH balance. Rose water mitigates the pH change caused by harsh cleansers, chemicals, hard water, etc, preventing skin from getting too dry or oily and keeping it healthy and glowing.

It is a natural astringent
Rose water possesses astringent properties, which help gently cleanse the skin of grime and excess oil, tighten pores, and tone the skin. This makes rose water a great option to prevent blackheads, acne, pimples, and whiteheads. Being natural, pure rose water doesn’t dry out the skin like alcohol-based astringents.

It improves skin’s permeability
Another benefit is that rose water increases the skin’s permeability. Low permeability means it’s hard for substances to penetrated the skin and get absorbed. For skincare products to work they need to penetrate the skin’s layers so that the more of the beneficial nutrients can get absorbed. Spritzing on natural, pure rose water before applying any skincare helps with this.

Hydrates and moisturises skin
When used in skincare, rose water improves the skin barrier and reduces loss of moisture, preventing cells from drying out. It increases the water content in the skin, providing much-needed hydration to the outer layer, giving it a boost of moisture, and making it look plump and refreshed.

All these benefits make rose water a versatile potion that can be used as a natural skin toner, facial mist, pore cleanser, makeup remover, and acne treatment. You can also use it to reduce under-eye puffiness, treat razor burns, and condition your hair.
