With its bright, colourful walls, furniture in pastel shades, stain glass windows, and cozy vibe, Mrs. Magpie is where you’d go if you want to have a tea party. Take your pick from a wide variety of cupcakes, lemon meringue, nutty praline cake, cinnamon apple cake, cherry and cream cheese cake, peanut butter flavoured cakes, and scones. Wrap up your visit with a piping hot mug of the delicious hot chocolate.

The Rouge, Park Circus Area & Hindustan Park
It’s claimed that this quaint bakery was responsible for bringing macarons, cupcakes and red velvet to Kolkata. We’re not sure if that is true. But we do know that their buttery cupcakes and macarons are the talk of the town. Bite in to the signature red velvet cupcake that comes loaded with cream cheese or the chocolate truffle or crème brulee. Don’t forget to check out the red velvet brownie, teacakes, and fondant cakes.

One can’t talk about Kolkata and not mention the treasure trove of Bengali sweet shops spread across the metropolis. While it’s hard to pick just a few, Girish Chandra Dey and Nakur Chandra Nandy definitely makes it to the list. Going strong since 1844, this sweetmeat shop an amazing range of mishtis. Popular ones include mousumi sandesh, parijat sandesh, jolbhora, gurer sandwich, kanchagolla, and different varieties of chocolate sandesh.
Balaram Mullick and Radharaman Mullick, multiple locations
Another iconic mishti brand and an institution in itself, head to any one of the several branches scattered across Kolkata to dig into old Bengali classics as well as some modern variations. While you definitely need to try the mishti dois and nolen gurer sandesh, chhana sondesh, and labanga lotika, also check out their more ‘modern’ sweets like the jaggery soufflé, chocolate mishtis, mango gelato sandesh, and kesar kulfi sandesh.
Bhim Chandra Nag, Bowbazaar & Bara Bazar
Started by Paran Chandra Nag in 1826 in Bow Bazar, this is one of the oldest sweet shops in Kolkata, serving some of the best traditional Bengali sweets. But that doesn’t mean they haven’t kept up with the times and understood customers’ varying tastes. Popular sweets here include ladikeni, ashubhog sandesh, monohora sandesh, dilkhush sandesh, abar khabo sandesh and paradise sandesh.
Ganguram, multiple outlets
This popular brand of sweet shops was started in the late 19th century by Ganguram Chaurasia, a skilled halwai, who came all the way from Varanasi to ply his trade in the city. Now, there are over 25 Ganguram outlets that serve a wide range of sweets. Don’t miss the indrani, mishti doi, sankh Sandesh, rose Sandesh, talshansh, kesar malai roll, and rasmadhuri.
