When it comes to big value flatscreen TV, JVC is back in the driving seat with the week’s smartest 4k telly deal.
The brand, which is exclusive to Currys PC World, currently has this 50-inch flatscreen, model LT-50CA890, listed at £399.99.
Why we rate it
The set is a 4k UHD smart model with HDR support and uses Google’s Android TV smart operating system.
That’s your top three tick boxes ticked, right there.
JVC was once synonymous with the VHS, the home video format that made the corner video store the place to get home entertainment. Today, that rental store has been replaced by streaming services, and there’s plenty available through this TV.
Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ are the tip of an iceberg of streaming choice on Google’s Play Store.
What’s more, Freeview Play, the newest version of the Freeview TV system comes with all the mainstream catch-up TV players built-in (BBC iPlayer, ITVHub, C4, My5, UKTV Play). A seven day retrospective programme guide makes it easy to browse for shows you might have missed.
Design wise, JVC has kept things suitably minimal: a thin bezel surrounds the panel, which sits atop a central wireframe pedestal. There’s (only) two HDMI inputs though, for a TV box, media streamer or games console. At 62mm deep, the set should comfortably fit most AV furniture.
Android TV is a powerhouse of smart functionality. There’s Chromecast built-in, which makes it easy to cast content (photos, videos, music) from an Android smartphone, and Google Assistant is also on hand, if you want to use voice control for programme searches .
Audio output is rated at a healthy 20W, but my advice would be to budget for a soundbar. The thin nature of this flatscreen means you’ll hanker for a sonic upgrade to match the big picture.
We rate this a tempting value 4k option for wannabe 4k bingers.
