Billionaire invites 8 strangers to join his SpaceX flight to the moon

A Japanese billionaire is inviting eight artists (and possibly a life partner) to join his SpaceX mission to the moon.

The fashion mogul Yusaku Maezawa first announced he would take a group of artists on a six-day expedition around the moon, back in 2018. This March, he officially invited members of the public to apply to become one of the chosen eight. The “dearMoon” mission is expected to take place in 2023.

Last year, Maezawa lamented a breakup with his girlfriend. The 44-year-old hoped the space mission would lead him to his future wife. Now that’s a grand romantic gesture.

“As feelings of loneliness and emptiness slowly begin to surge upon me, there’s one thing that I think about: continuing to love one woman,” 44-year-old Maezawa wrote on his website. “I want to find a life partner. With that future partner of mine, I want to shout our love and world peace from outer space.”

As 2023 approaches, Maezawa has opened up applications to artists, from all walks of life and no matter what kind of art they make. With no romantic expectations, of course.

According to CNN, Maezawa said applicants should seek to “push the envelope” and “to help other people and greater society in some way.” No pressure. The billionaire will cover the costs of the trip and expects a total of 10 to 12 passengers.

He intends to use SpaceX’s Starship rocket, one of the first aircraft designed for commercial space travel. However, while SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said the company plans to launch the Starship’s commercial flights in 2023, whether it will meet its deadline remains unseen.

If all goes as planned, dearMoon will take three days to reach its destination, then spend some time orbiting around the moon, before finally returning home.
