It might be a few weeks away but nonetheless the clock is ticking and the countdown to Black Friday has begun.
With an estimated £1.27bn spent in the 24-hour period last year, there’s no denying that for many shoppers, it’s the best day of the year to get your hands on something you’ve been saving up for or a bargain just in time for the gift-giving season.
So, when is it, which shops are getting involved and what deals can you expect?

Which shops are doing Black Friday?
Well, it's still to be confirmed, and not all stores take part in Black Friday but judging by last year you can expect to pick up some great bargains from the following -
Amazon – The brand that brought Black Friday to the UK in 2010 - you can expect to nab some serious steals from Amazon. The web giant has its own dedicated Black Friday deals page where you will be able to find offers on everything from gaming and tech to fashion.
Argos – Last time the retail giant recorded 8,000 visits a minute within the first hour of opening and with discounts on toys, tech and household appliances you can expect the same turn out again this year.
Asos – One for the fashion fans, last year the site offered a simple 20 per cent discount across the entire site and while it’s yet to be confirmed, we predict a similar offer on both men and women’s clothes.
Boots – A go-to for gifts, we predict the high street retailer will launch hundreds of deals on make-up, perfume and electrical goods this time round.
Currys PC World – Dropping its prices once again you’ll be able to pick up a host of gadgets from top brands – think televisions, tablets and even laptops.
Game – If you’re a gamer you’re going to want to pay a visit to Game, be it online or in-store. Here, we predict huge discounts on console bundles, accessories and the latest games.
Harrods – A department store synonymous with luxury, a visit to Harrods this Black Friday will mean you can pick designer garb for a fraction of the price.
John Lewis – Here you can expect deals online and in-store across tech, home and fashion lines. Plus, with the brand’s ‘Never Knowingly Undersold’ tag line you can expect the retailer to be price matching on pretty much everything.
Mobile Phones Direct – If you’re looking to upgrade your mobile then it might be worth holding out because the retailer has teased that it will be releasing details of special offers around one week before Black Friday – expect great deals on iPhone and Samsung handsets.
New Look – One of the high streets most popular fashion retailers, last year New Look offered huge reductions of up to 50 per cent across all departments including womenswear, menswear, maternity and teen collections. This year we predict much of the same.
Selfridges – Get your Christmas shopping wrapped up early with impressive discounts on high-end make-up and designer fashion.
Tesco – You won’t want to miss Tesco’s Black Friday discounts which expect to cover everything from electricals and toys to home.
Topshop – One of Britain’s favourite high street stores, last year Topshop offered 50 per cent of selected lines including dresses, bags and footwear.
Very – Last year Very reported an average of 1.7 orders every second and it looks like this Black Friday could do even better with discounts on tech, toys, furniture and fashion.
What is Black Friday?
Whether you’re in the US or the UK, Black Friday is fast becoming the biggest and best day in the shopping year to hunt for a bargain.
Though its roots lie in America, the pre-Christmas shopping frenzy made its way to the UK back in 2010 and while the discounts are traditionally on for one day only, some shops such as Amazon, extend their discounts during the week too.
When is Black Friday?
Black Friday is always the day after Thanksgiving. This year that falls on Friday November 24.
Why is it called Black Friday?
While nobody is entirely certain of where the name comes from there are a couple of potential explanations.
For some it marks the day that retailers books go from red to black as they make their biggest profit of the year.
But others say that the name originated from the American police during the 1950s and 1960s to describe the chaos that ensued as Thanksgiving shoppers poured into town causing terrible traffic jams.

As you’d expect, brands remain fairly tight-lipped about which products they will be discounting, but looking back on past Black Friday’s you can expect to find deals on everything from TV’s and laptops, to clothes, make-up and homeware.
Online retailers like Amazon typically go all-out, while others - like Apple - typically discount fewer items.

Whether you’re one of many brave sale-seekers hitting the high street or you’re staying in and surfing the world-wide-web there are few things to keep in mind when hunting for the best bargains.
Firstly, many of these deals are only available for a limited time so it’s important to be prepared and prioritise your shopping time accordingly.
And, while it can also be tempting to buy things on a whim, try to plan what you want beforehand so you don’t overspend too much.
Last of all, make sure you know your return rights. While most stores don’t change their policy for the sake of a few days, it’s best to check it out in advance so you’re not stuck with spur of the moment buys you don’t really want.
