Black Ops? There's a Watch For That

The German high-performance tuning company Brabus is known for putting a ‘Black Ops’ spin on Mercedes-Benz models from the S-Class sedan to the Smart Car. Much like Henry Ford it tends to favour one colour, and that colour is black.

A recent line of heavily armoured G-Wagens was known as the Invicto series. They weren’t just bulletproof, they could withstand a 33-pound blast of TNT. “Every single material pairing and screw connection was tested by being shot at from several angles and at projectile speeds which are well beyond the standard speed of the calibre being protected against,” says the Brabus website. Reassuring for doing the school run.

Anyway, now the hard-nut aftermarket tuning company has teamed up with another brand known for its products that go above and beyond when it comes to toughness and performance.

Panerai’s dive watches are regarded for experimenting with materials and technology. As such it's new watch is a collab with Brabus, inspired by their “Shadow Black Ops” series of boats. For Panerai the Submersible S Brabus Black Ops Edition represents the first time it has produced a skeletonised automatic movement and stands as “a testimony to both brands’ roots in technology and craftsmanship”.

Containing 341 components and waterproof to 300 meters, it features Panerai’s own Carbotech (carbon) casing, a GMT hand, an am/pm indicator, a date window and a power reserve on the reverse. At 47mm this watch doesn’t just suggest a Jason Statham lifestyle but his wrist measurements too.

It’s all faintly mad, but brilliantly so and frankly it out James Bond's any James Bond watch so far. And to be fair, some of the designs developed by Panerai for the Italian Navy, including the Luminor and Radiomir, were covered by the Military Secrets Act, so there is some shared history in clandestine operations.

One for your next secret mission, then. With or without your blacked-out £500k speedboat.
