BLK & Bold reimagines what it means to create a community via coffee

Our team is dedicated to finding and telling you more about the products and deals we love. If you love them too and decide to purchase through the links below, we may receive a commission. Pricing and availability are subject to change.

“Shop Small” is a series where we speak to founders of small businesses discussing how their products and services address the needs of the members of the communities in which the founders identify.

Turning something that you consume every day into a means to give back is how some businesses get their start. In fact, that’s exactly how Black-owned coffee brand Blk & Bold became a nationally sold enterprise.

What started as a 20-year-long friendship between Rod Johnson and Pernell Cezar blossomed into a business that pays it forward.

“We launched back in June 2018, our coffee roastery, with the intent to give people access to support disadvantaged youth by a way of doing something that they do every single day,” says founder Rod Johnson, “and that’s enjoying their cup of coffee.”

The Blk & Bold Rise and Grind Roast is what co-founder Pernell Cezar says is the brand’s “hero SKU.”

“That’s a blend between Columbia and Southern America as well as micro-roasted in house by our team,” he explains.

When you purchase Blk & Bold products, five percent of all profits go to various youth organizations like Code Fever in Miami, City Growers in New York City and Comp-U-Dopt in Houston. Ultimately, every product purchased helps a young person develop their future.

“We’re in an election year, and everyone’s talking about get out and vote,” Johnson says. “But you can do that every day with the purchases that you make. If we can be a gateway for someone to realize that, then I think we’re headed in the right direction.”

Though it’s one of few Black-owned coffee brands, Blk & Bold is available on Amazon and at Target to coffee lovers everywhere.
