Blue Jays ink infielder Marcus Semien to 1-year, $18M deal

Former Oakland Athletics infielder Marcus Semien agreed to a one-year, $18-million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, pending a physical, according to multiple sources.

Former Cleveland Indians second baseman Carlos Baerga, who retired from MLB in 2005, broke the news on Instagram.

Semien is expected to play second base for the Blue Jays, although he could be rotated throughout the infield, featuring at shortstop for the majority of his career. The 30-year-old provides insurance for burgeoning stars Bo Bichette and Cavan Biggio.

Last season, Semien hit .233/.305/.374 in 211 at-bats, with seven home runs, 28 RBI over 53 games.

During his last full season in 2019, Semien hit .285/.369/.522 with 33 home runs and 92 RBI and finished third in AL MVP voting.

After years of lobbying from their fan base, the Blue Jays have finally begun to open its purse, signing former Astros star outfielder George Springer to a six-year, $150-million contract on Jan. 23.
