Blue Jays' George Springer to begin season on IL, will miss at least 6 games

Toronto Blue Jays star outfielder George Springer will begin the season on the injured list with an oblique strain and will miss at least six games, manager Charlie Montoyo told reporters Wednesday.

Springer was Toronto's major offseason signing, inking a six-year, $150-million contract with the club in January.

"The MRI showed improvement, which is great," Montoyo said. "Our hope is to get him back as soon as possible, so we’re doing what’s best for him at this point."

The three-time All-Star was the headliner of an aggressive offseason for the Blue Jays, which saw them add Marcus Semien, Joe Panik, Robbie Ray, Tyler Chatwood and Kirby Yates, in hopes of knocking off the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees for AL East supremacy.

One of the best lead-off hitters in baseball, Springer was named World Series MVP in 2017 and the Blue Jays are certainly looking forward to his return to the lineup in what could be one of their most promising seasons in recent memory.
