Blues add scoring punch, sign Mike Hoffman to PTO

TORONTO, ONTARIO - AUGUST 04: Mike Hoffman #68 of the Florida Panthers celebrates his goal against the New York Islanders during the first period in Game Two of the Eastern Conference Qualification Round at Scotiabank Arena on August 04, 2020 in Toronto, Ontario. Mike Hoffman’s pursuit of a new team may be finally coming to an end.

The St. Louis Blues announced Sunday that they signed Hoffman to a professional tryout contract (PTO) where the 30-year-old will join the team on Jan. 3 for training camp, with a genuine shot at cracking their roster.

It’s been baffling to some why a player of Hoffman’s caliber has been afforded this much time on the open market, posting six consecutive seasons with 22 goals or more. There are genuine concerns about his defensive shortcomings, but it would be difficult to make a case that his one-way play is so much of a liability that it would be a deterrent for other teams. Consider this a low-risk, high-reward move for the 2019 champions.

Hoffman recorded 29 goals and 59 points in 65 games with the Panthers last season, adding five points in four games during the NHL’s return to play.

He is still eligible to sign a full NHL contract with another team while on the PTO with the Blues, which expires at the end of training camp.
